Chisinau City Day is celebrated on October 14 annually by the people of Moldova to mark the anniversary of the city. Also on this very day falls the ‘Hramul Chisinaului’ which is a Russian religious day to honor the Holy Virgin’s intercession.
In the evening, there is an open-air musical at the Great National Assembly Square, followed by a magnificent firework show. The day is a public holiday in Chisinau. The city is the key industrial and commercial center of the Republic of Moldova and is situated between Romania and Ukraine. Chisinau City is one of the most prosperous and populous cities in Moldova.
HISTORY OF CHISINAU CITY DAY
Moldova is an Eastern European nation and shares its borders with Romania and Ukraine. The region was at the center of the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture that existed between 5500 and 2750 B.C. Cucuteni culture is also the oldest European civilization.
The nation’s region lies in a strategic position between Asia and Europe and hence became the target of countless invasions. These invasions made the nation a breeding ground for different cultures such as the Goths, Avars, Huns, Bulgars, Magyars, Mongols, and the Tatars. In the middle ages, the region was a part of the Soviet Republic.
Moldova became a sovereign country in 1990 after a Parliament declaration. After a failed Soviet coup d’état attempt in 1991, the nation declared itself independent from the Soviet Union on December 25. In 1992 Moldova became an officially recognized independent country after it was granted membership in the U.N.
Chisinau is the capital city of Moldova. It is one of the most populous, commercial, and prosperous cities with a population of about 0.67 million people. The city had a humble beginning in 1436, as a monastery village. Back then, it was a part of the Principality of Moldavia. The small monastery village had a population of village 7,000 by the beginning of the 19th century.
Chisinau was not always a part of Moldova. After the Russo-Turkish War in 1812, the city became the capital of Bessarabia. After Bessarabia declared independence from the crumbling Russian empire and later joined the Kingdom of Romania, Chisinau became the second-largest city in Romania by 1919. By June 1940, when the region was annexed by the Soviet Union. Chisinau became the capital of the recently established Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic.
